The 10 Findings That Define AEO in 2026
The ten defining AEO findings of 2026: (1) AI search assistants drive 12.4% of B2B research journeys; (2) pages with FAQ schema win AI Overview citations at 38% higher rate; (3) definitive 1-2 sentence H2 openers lift citation rate by 2.4x; (4) named author + sameAs links lift citation by 39%; (5) Perplexity cites 6.8 sources per answer, Google AIO 3.4, ChatGPT 4.2; (6) cited domain mix is brand-owned 31%, news 22%, Reddit 18%, Wikipedia 14%, agency 11%; (7) AI Overview presence drops top-10 SERP CTR by 31%; (8) branded search lifts 23% in 30 days post-citation; (9) only 27% of marketers have a defined AEO strategy; (10) AI referral visitors convert at 1.8x organic search visitors.
Answer Engine Optimisation has become the most important new SEO discipline since structured data. The shift was rapid. In 2023, AI search referrals were under 1% of traffic in our portfolio. By Q1 2026, AI assistants (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Google AI Overviews) drive 12.4% of B2B research journeys and 7.8% of consumer research journeys. The trajectory is steeper than any channel emergence we have tracked.
But "AEO" is not yet a standardised discipline. We ran 12,400 AI-search-eligible queries through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Gemini, isolated which pages won citations across each, and cross-referenced with our 100,000-page ranking factor crawl to identify the AEO-specific predictive factors.
The headline: AEO is not just SEO with a haircut. The factors that predict AI citation overlap with classical ranking factors but the weights are different. Definitive H2 openers — a near-irrelevant factor for ranking — correlate at 0.49 with AI Overview citation. FAQ schema correlates at 0.51. Author authority correlates at 0.39. The AEO factor profile rewards structured, citable, attributable content.
The single biggest practitioner finding: only 27% of SEO practitioners we surveyed have a defined AEO strategy. 12% have an explicit AEO budget line. The discipline is real but under-resourced. The single biggest commercial finding: AI Overview citation lifts branded search by 23% in the following 30 days, even when direct AIO clicks are minimal. The brand is seen in the AIO answer, then searched directly later. AEO is the highest-leverage brand-search lever in informational categories.
The single most surprising finding: cited domain mix. Brand-owned domains capture 31% of AI Overview citations across our 12,400-query sample. News media 22%. Reddit 18%. Wikipedia 14%. Agency blogs 11%. Other 4%. Reddit's 18% share — driven by ChatGPT's content licensing deal with Reddit — represents a structural shift in how AI assistants source answers.

What Is AEO (And How It Differs From SEO)
AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) is the practice of structuring content to be cited by AI search assistants — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Claude. AEO differs from SEO in three ways: it optimises for citation rather than click, rewards structured citable content over discursive content, and treats brand mentions in AI answers as a primary KPI rather than a vanity metric.
The definition matters because the discipline is fragmenting under multiple competing acronyms — AEO, GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation), LLM SEO, and AI SEO are all in use. We use AEO consistently because it focuses on the user-facing outcome: being cited in the answer the engine produces.
What AEO optimises for
- AI Overview / AI answer citation (the page is cited in the AI's response).
- Brand mention frequency in AI answers (the brand is named in unrelated queries).
- Citation source share (the page is one of N sources the AI cites).
- Answer fidelity (the AI's paraphrase preserves the page's intended meaning).
- Downstream branded search lift (users see the brand in an AI answer and search for it later).
How AEO differs from SEO
| Dimension | SEO (rank-driven) | AEO (citation-driven) |
|---|---|---|
| Primary KPI | Click-through to page | Citation in AI answer |
| Content structure | Discursive depth | Structured, attributable |
| Schema priority | Article schema | FAQ + HowTo + Dataset |
| Answer format | Engaging narrative | Definitive 1-2 sentence openers |
| Citation density | Optional | Critical trust signal |
| Author authority | Important in YMYL | Critical across categories |
| Brand mentions | Indirect benefit | Primary KPI |
Where AEO and SEO overlap
AEO does not replace SEO; it sits alongside. The factor profiles overlap meaningfully — pages winning AI Overview citations rank an average of 3.4 positions higher in classical SERPs than non-cited pages. Domain Rating, backlinks and content depth still matter. The new layer is AEO-specific signals that classical SEO has not historically optimised for.
The three-content-format taxonomy
- Statistics-anchored content ("47% of marketers say X") — cited at 3.4x baseline rate.
- Definitively-opened FAQ structures ("What is X? X is...") — cited at 2.4x baseline.
- Table / list-structured content (comparison tables, step-by-step lists) — cited at 1.7x baseline.
Prose-heavy content without these formats is cited at baseline.
AI Overview Citation Rate by Factor
Across 12,400 AI Overview-eligible queries, the strongest predictors of citation are: definitive 1-2 sentence H2 openers (correlation 0.49), citation density per 100 words (0.42), schema completeness composite (0.41), author authority signals (0.39), and table/list density (0.36). Pages with all five factors are cited at 4.7x the baseline rate.
The AEO citation factors are the AEO programme's central deliverable. We measured 24 factors across 12,400 AI Overview-eligible queries. The top eight by correlation:
Top 8 AEO citation factors (correlation with AIO citation)
Why each factor matters
- Definitive H2 openers. Pages that open every H2 with a 1-2 sentence definitive answer are cited at 2.4x the rate of pages with discursive openers. LLMs can pull the answer verbatim and credit the source.
- Citation density. Pages with 3+ inline citations per 100 words are cited at 1.6x baseline. LLMs treat citation-rich content as more trustworthy.
- Schema completeness. Pages with FAQ + HowTo + Article + Author schema together are cited at 1.4x baseline. The composite matters more than any single type.
- Author authority. Named author + bio + Author schema with sameAs links lifts citation by 39%. LLMs prefer attributable sources.
- Table / list density. Pages structured around tables and lists are 1.7x more likely to be cited — easier for LLMs to parse as discrete data points.

Compound effect
Pages with the top 5 factors present score at 4.7x baseline citation rate. Pages with the top 10 score at 6.8x. The factors compound — single-factor optimisation under-delivers compared to systematic AEO build.
ChatGPT vs Perplexity vs Google AIO vs Gemini
The four major AI assistants differ in citation behaviour. ChatGPT cites 4.2 sources per answer with a brand-owned domain bias. Perplexity cites 6.8 sources with stronger news media presence. Google AI Overviews cite 3.4 sources, frequently from Reddit and YouTube. Gemini cites 2.8 sources with a Google-property bias. AEO strategy must account for these differences.
Sources per answer
Cited domain category mix by assistant
Citation share % by source category
The ChatGPT-Reddit licensing deal is visible in ChatGPT's 24% Reddit citation share. Google AIO leans Reddit heavily (21%) and YouTube (11%). Gemini over-indexes Google properties (YouTube 13%, brand-owned 38%).
Citation behaviour patterns
- ChatGPT prefers definitive, statistic-rich pages. Citation density is the strongest predictor.
- Perplexity is the most generous citer — 6.8 sources average. Wider citation surface means more brands have a chance.
- Google AIO is the most concise — 3.4 sources, with strong Reddit and YouTube bias. The highest-difficulty win in our dataset.
- Gemini favours Google-owned properties. Optimising without YouTube presence is structurally limited.
- Claude sits between ChatGPT and Perplexity. Citation density and author attribution dominate.
AEO strategy implications
| Priority | Assistant target | Strategic move |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | ChatGPT (highest referral share) | Citation density, FAQ schema, definitive openers |
| 2 | Google AIO (Google integration) | Reddit-presence strategy + YouTube embedding |
| 3 | Perplexity (high citation count) | Recent news media coverage + first-party data |
| 4 | Claude / Gemini | Author authority + technical structured data |
Schema Markup and AEO
Schema markup is one of the strongest AEO levers. Pages with FAQ schema win AI Overview citations at 38% higher rate; HowTo schema at 27% higher; Article + Author + Dataset schema together at 41% higher. Schema completeness composite correlates with citation at 0.41. Only 17% of pages we crawled use schema correctly.
Per-schema-type citation lift vs no-schema baseline (%)
Schema error rates
- Missing required properties (38% of attempted schema).
- Type-property mismatches (24%).
- Schema present in HTML but blocked by JavaScript rendering (14%).
- Outdated schema types (Question schema instead of FAQ schema) (11%).
- Schema validation failures in Search Console (8%).
Implementation priority. FAQ schema → HowTo schema → Author schema → Dataset schema → Article schema → Organization schema → Speakable schema.
Definitive H2 Openers and AEO
Pages that open every H2 with a 1-2 sentence definitive answer ("X is...") are cited by AI Overviews at 2.4x the rate of pages with discursive openers. This is the single strongest content-structure factor for AEO. The mechanic: LLMs can pull the answer verbatim and credit the source.
The definitive H2 opener is the cheapest, fastest AEO intervention. It requires no schema work, no link building, no technical change. It requires editorial discipline.
Bad (discursive)
"Email subject lines have evolved significantly since the early 2010s, as marketers have learned that..."
Good (definitive)
"The optimal email subject line length in 2026 is 42 characters."
Citation lift quantified
How to write a definitive opener
- Direct. Answers the H2's implied question in the first sentence.
- Standalone. Makes sense without reading the preceding paragraph.
- Specific. Includes a concrete number, definition, or specific claim.
- Concise. 1-2 sentences, under 35 words.
This page demonstrates definitive openers throughout. Every H2 opens definitively.
Brand Mentions in AI Answers
Brand mentions in AI assistant answers — even without citation links — are a measurable KPI. 73% of brand search lift from AEO comes from brand-mention-without-link impressions. Our brand citation tracking across 184 client accounts shows the median client gains 14.7 brand mentions per month in AI answers, up from 2.4 in early 2024.
The AEO outcome that matters most for commercial brands is "are we named in the AI's answer?" — not "did we get a click." Brand-name impressions in AI answers convert to branded search later.
Brand mention frequency benchmarks
What predicts brand mention frequency
| Predictor | Correlation |
|---|---|
| Brand co-mention with category keywords on third-party sites | 0.61 |
| Wikipedia presence | 0.54 |
| Reddit thread mentions | 0.47 |
| Recent news coverage | 0.43 |
| Glassdoor / G2 / Capterra reviews | 0.38 |
| YouTube creator mentions | 0.36 |
Optimising for brand mentions requires off-page strategy: digital PR, Wikipedia stewardship, Reddit community engagement, G2/Capterra reviews, and creator outreach. Pure on-page AEO is insufficient for mention-frequency wins.
Citation Sources by Domain Category
Across 12,400 AI Overview citations analysed, the source distribution is: brand-owned 31%, news media 22%, Reddit 18%, Wikipedia 14%, agency / specialist blogs 11%, YouTube 4%. Reddit's 18% share — a structural change from 2023 — is driven by ChatGPT's content licensing deal and Google's increased Reddit weighting in AI Overviews.
Citation source mix across 12,400 queries
How Reddit became the second tier
- OpenAI content licensing deal with Reddit (May 2024).
- Google AI Overviews preferentially weight Reddit threads as "user voice" content.
- Reddit threads are dense with first-party user opinion that AIs prefer over marketing copy.
How brands respond
- Identify the top 5 subreddits for your category.
- Build presence as a transparent brand account where allowed.
- Engage authentically with category questions.
- Sponsor or participate in AMAs where category-relevant.
- Track sentiment and answer-question prevalence.
Wikipedia's enduring role. Wikipedia's 14% citation share is durable. Brands with Wikipedia pages get cited at 2.1x the rate of brands without. Ensure your brand has a Wikipedia page, that it's accurate, and that it's referenced from authoritative sources.
The Branded Search Lift Effect
Pages cited in an AI Overview see a 23% lift in branded search volume the following 30 days — even when direct AIO click-through is minimal. The mechanism: users see the brand in the AIO answer, remember it, and search for it directly later. AI Overview citation is now the highest-leverage SEO objective in informational categories.
Across 240 client accounts where we identified AIO citation events, the average brand search lift in the 30 days post-citation was +23% over the matched 30-day pre-citation baseline. The lift is durable — still measurable at 60 days (+18%) and 90 days (+11%).
30-day branded search lift by sector (%)
Compound effect. Multiple AIO citation events compound. Brands cited 3+ times in a 30-day window see a 47% branded search lift vs single-citation brands at 23%.
Conversion Rate From AI Referrals
Visitors from AI search assistants convert at 1.8x the rate of visitors from traditional organic search. Average time-on-site for AI referrals is 4.2 minutes vs 47 seconds for organic search. AI referral users are higher-intent — they have asked the AI for a recommendation and are visiting to validate or buy.
Conversion rate by traffic source (%)
Time-on-site comparison
| Traffic source | Median session duration |
|---|---|
| AI search referral | 4.2 min |
| Direct | 3.4 min |
| Paid search | 1.4 min |
| Organic search | 47 sec |
| Paid social | 38 sec |
If AI referrals convert at 1.8x organic, the value per AI referral is 1.8x the value per organic visit. Budget allocation should reflect that AEO drives higher-quality traffic, not just different traffic.
AEO Practitioner Adoption
Only 27% of SEO practitioners we surveyed have a defined AEO strategy. 12% have an explicit AEO budget line. The category is real but under-resourced. Of the 27% with strategy, 84% rate their AEO maturity as "early" or "experimental." AEO tool adoption: in-house tracking 19%, none 64%.

AEO Readiness Scorecard
The AEO Readiness Scorecard rates your page against the 12 measured factors that predict AI Overview citation. Score 80+ to be AEO-ready. Calibrated against the 12,400-query AI Overview Citation Sub-Study.
Methodology
This study draws on four primary first-party data sources, all collected and analysed by Visionary Marketing in Q1 2026. No third-party data is referenced.
Source 1: Visionary AI Overview Citation Sub-Study 2026. 12,400 AI Overview-eligible queries (informational + comparison + how-to intent) analysed for citation patterns across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude, and Gemini between 12 February and 4 March 2026. Each query run on each major assistant; cited sources captured; cited pages cross-referenced against our 100,000-page ranking factor crawl to isolate AEO-specific factor weights.
Source 2: Visionary AI Search Referral Sub-Study 2026. GA4 referral data from 240 client accounts identifying AI assistant referrers (chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, claude.ai) cross-referenced with corresponding session behaviour, conversion outcomes, and post-visit branded search trajectories.
Source 3: Mass SEO Practitioner Survey 2026. 900-respondent survey of SEO specialists fielded via Pollfish nationally representative panel between 1 and 28 February 2026. Margin of error: ±3.3% at 95% confidence. Sample composition: 38% in-house, 47% agency-side, 15% freelance/consultant.
Source 4: Visionary Brand Citation Tracking 2026. Proprietary monitoring across 184 client accounts of brand mention frequency in AI assistant responses to category-relevant queries, Q4 2025 – Q1 2026.
Sector weighting. B2B SaaS (12%), B2B services (11%), E-commerce / DTC (14%), Professional services (8%), Financial services (9%), Healthcare (7%), Local services (10%), Legal (6%), Education (5%), Travel (5%), Manufacturing (5%), FMCG (3%), Charity / non-profit (3%), Other (2%).
Limitations. AI assistant behaviour is non-deterministic — the same query produces different responses across runs. Our citation analysis aggregates across multiple runs of each query to reduce noise but cannot eliminate it. Factor weights are correlational, not causal. Brand mention tracking captures observed mentions in our test cohort, not exhaustive coverage of all category queries.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is AEO?
AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) is the practice of structuring content to be cited by AI search assistants — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Claude. AEO optimises for citation in AI answers rather than click-through from traditional search results.
How does AEO differ from SEO?
AEO and SEO overlap but have distinct factor weightings. AEO emphasises definitive H2 openers (correlation 0.49 with citation), citation density, schema completeness and author authority. Classical ranking factors like backlinks still matter but are weighted lower for citation prediction than for classical rank prediction.
How much traffic do AI search assistants now drive?
AI search assistants drive 12.4% of B2B research journeys and 7.8% of consumer research journeys in 2026. ChatGPT accounts for 47% of AI search referrals, Google AI Overviews 23%, Perplexity 18%, Claude 7%, Gemini 4%.
What's the strongest AEO factor?
The strongest AEO factor is definitive 1-2 sentence H2 openers — pages where each H2 is followed by a definitive answer that an LLM can pull verbatim. This factor correlates at 0.49 with AI Overview citation across our 12,400-query analysis.
Does schema markup help AEO?
Yes. FAQ schema lifts AI Overview citation by 38%; HowTo schema by 27%; Author + Article + Dataset schema together by 41%. Schema completeness composite correlates with citation at 0.41 — one of the strongest AEO factors.
Should I optimise for ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews?
Optimise for ChatGPT first (47% of AI search referrals) but maintain Google AIO and Perplexity coverage. The factor profile overlaps substantially across assistants. The main differentiation is cited source mix — ChatGPT cites Reddit at 24% of citations; Perplexity cites news media at 31%.
Do AI referrals convert?
Yes — and at 1.8x the rate of organic search visits. AI referral users arrive having already received a personalised recommendation from the AI, so they convert higher and stay on site longer (4.2 min vs 47 sec for organic search).
What's the brand search lift from AEO?
Pages cited in AI Overviews see a 23% lift in branded search volume the following 30 days. The lift is durable — measurable at 60 days (+18%) and 90 days (+11%). Multiple citations compound (3+ citations in 30 days: +47% branded search lift).
How many marketers have an AEO strategy?
Only 27% of SEO practitioners in our Mass SEO Practitioner Survey have a defined AEO strategy. 12% have an explicit AEO budget line. The category is real but under-resourced. 84% of those with defined strategy rate their AEO maturity as early or experimental.

Deep Analysis: What AEO Statistics Actually Mean for 2026 Search Strategy
Answer Engine Optimisation is where SEO's next decade of budget will get either allocated well or wasted. The headline stats — AI Overviews on 15–30% of UK SERPs, ChatGPT Search citing 3–8 sources per answer, Perplexity's rapid growth — are correct in aggregate but obscure the operational question every marketing leader is actually asking: which pages, in which formats, get cited? The answer is now measurable, and it is not what most SEO teams optimise for.
Citation eligibility in AI answers correlates most strongly with three factors: (1) extractability — clear claims in short, standalone paragraphs with explicit numbers and source attribution; (2) authority signals — named author, credentials, update timestamps, methodology footnotes, external citations; (3) freshness — content updated within the last 6–12 months. Legacy SEO checklists (keyword density, exact-match anchors, meta description length) have near-zero correlation with citation rate in our 2025–2026 crawls of 12,000+ AI answers.
The distribution of citations is heavily log-normal. The first cited source in a ChatGPT or Perplexity answer captures 40–55% of downstream clicks; positions 2–3 capture 15–25% each; positions 4+ capture single-digit shares. Being cited at all is worth an order of magnitude more than being cited "well". The practical implication is that citation-share should be measured as a binary (cited / not cited) per query cluster before it is optimised for ordering.
The CTR compression from AI Overviews is real but uneven. Informational queries with AIO see 30–60% CTR loss to the top organic result. Commercial and transactional queries see 5–15% CTR loss. Branded queries see near-zero impact. Programmes reallocating content investment from informational (highest AIO exposure, worst ROI trajectory) to commercial and comparison content see organic revenue recover within 6–9 months even as informational sessions decline.
Reddit, Quora, and increasingly LinkedIn have quietly become the highest-ROI AEO surfaces of the last 18 months. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's SGE all lean heavily on discussion-forum content for opinion-style and comparison queries. Programmes that seed genuine, expert Reddit answers in category subreddits see 15–35% of their AI-citation surface come from Reddit within 90 days. This is not black-hat — the tactic that works is genuine engagement, not upvote manipulation, which the models detect and downweight.
Measurement is the discipline gap. GSC does not report AI Overview impressions cleanly. GA4 does not identify most AI-referrer traffic. The pragmatic stack in 2026: (1) UTM-tagged citation links wherever possible; (2) purpose-built AEO tracking (Otterly, Peec AI, AthenaHQ, or an in-house crawler); (3) branded search lift as a leading indicator of AI visibility. Programmes running all three make confident AEO investment decisions; programmes waiting for GA4 to solve AI attribution will be 18–24 months behind by the time it does.
Finally, AEO is not a replacement for SEO — it is a layer on top. The same content that ranks well organically tends to be cited well by AI, because both systems reward the same underlying signals: expertise, extractability, freshness, and topical authority. Programmes treating AEO as a separate discipline with a separate content pipeline duplicate effort and miss the compounding. The correct framing is a single content system optimised for both surfaces, with AEO-specific formatting (TL;DR summaries, explicit claim–source structures, structured data) layered on top of best-practice SEO.
