Overview

What is Shopify SEO?

Shopify SEO is the practice of optimising a Shopify store for organic search - product pages, collection pages, blog content, and the technical layer - while working within the platform's known constraints: enforced /products/ and /collections/ URL paths, duplicate content from filtered collections, partial default schema, and a blog limited to one post type.

Every Visionary engagement is built around a documented workaround for each of those constraints, theme-level Core Web Vitals optimisation, and product-level revenue tracking in GA4 and Search Console. The full limitations map is below - it is where our work starts.

For Shopify stores, organic search is one of the highest-margin acquisition channels - unlike paid advertising, the traffic a proper SEO strategy builds compounds over time without a per-click cost.

Visionary Marketing delivers SEO for UK and international brands, with senior specialists on every account. We combine deep technical expertise with commercial strategy to deliver measurable organic growth.

What You Get

What Shopify Gives You - and What We Build on Top

Shopify covers the basics out of the box. Our work starts where the defaults stop. Everything in the right-hand column is standard scope on a Visionary Shopify engagement.

Free / Default

Shopify gives you for free

  • Basic robots.txt
  • Basic sitemap.xml
  • Editable title + meta description per page
  • Basic Product schema (incomplete)
  • Mobile-responsive default themes
  • Built-in HTTPS / 301 redirect tooling

Custom Agency Work

What we deliver as standard scope

  • Full Product schema with offers, AggregateRating, Review
  • BreadcrumbList schema across the site
  • FAQPage schema on product pages where appropriate
  • Internal linking architecture beyond default templates
  • Image alt text governance at scale
  • Theme-specific Core Web Vitals optimisation
  • Custom canonicals for filtered collection pages
  • International URL strategy (Markets vs subfolder)

Each deliverable maps to a specific platform constraint - the full limitations map is below.

Shopify's SEO Limitations - And How We Work Around Each One

Shopify gives you fast hosting, a solid CDN and clean canonicals out of the box, but it also fixes your URL prefixes, locks the sitemap and adds a script for every app you install. We work around each constraint at theme level, and we report the outcome as organic revenue, not ranking screenshots.

DimensionWhat it costs youHow we work around it
/products/ and /collections/ enforced URL structureLimited site-architecture flexibilityStrategic use of meta-fields + canonicals to consolidate equity

Product schema not 100% Google-compliant by defaultRich-result eligibility gapsCustom JSON-LD injection via theme.liquid
robots.txt only partially editableCrawl-budget cannot be fully controlledIndexation governance via canonical + noindex meta
Default theme CWV scores frequently sub-parCore Web Vitals demote rankingsTheme audit + Liquid optimisation + image lazy-load
Internal search results pages indexable by defaultIndex bloat from search-result URLsManual noindex + crawl-rule overrides
Filtered collection pages produce duplicate contentCannibalisation between filtered URLsCanonical strategy + parameter handling
Limited international URL flexibilityHreflang implementation frictionShopify Markets vs subdirectory decision logic

Every Visionary Shopify engagement starts with this map. It is also a useful audit checklist: each row is a workaround that should be actively implemented on your store.

Duplicate URLs

How We Stop Duplicate Variant URLs Diluting Shopify Rankings

Shopify creates extra URLs for every variant and every collection path a product sits in. We consolidate those duplicates so one strong URL collects all the ranking signals, instead of five weak ones splitting them.

/products/handle/collections/dresses/products/handle?variant=12345

The problem

Two duplication patterns appear on almost every Shopify store. First, variant URLs: each size or colour gets a ?variant= parameter that Google can crawl. Second, collection-scoped paths: the same product resolves at /products/handle and at /collections/collection-name/products/handle. Shopify adds a canonical tag pointing at the clean URL, but canonicals are hints, not rules. When your theme's product grid links to the collection-scoped path, you spend crawl budget and internal link equity on URLs that will never rank.

The fix

Our fix sits in the theme, not an app. We edit the product card snippet in Liquid so every internal link points at the canonical /products/ path. We audit which parameter URLs Google has already indexed and clean them up with targeted rules. And we make a deliberate call on each variant: most consolidate under one product page, but a variant that matches real search demand, such as a named colourway or material, earns its own product with unique copy.

The full decision framework is in our guide to Shopify variant SEO, covering URLs, canonicals and when to split variants into standalone products.

Collection Architecture

Collection Architecture Built Around Real Search Demand

Collections are Shopify's category pages, and they win most of a store's non-branded rankings. We build one collection for every commercial keyword group your customers actually search, then give each one unique content.

  1. 01

Most Shopify stores run a handful of broad collections because that is how the theme shipped. Search demand is more specific than that. If people search "linen midi dresses", a filtered state of /collections/dresses cannot rank for it, but a dedicated collection can. We map keywords to collections, create the missing ones as smart collections with clear rules, and prune overlapping collections that cannibalise each other.

  2. 02

Shopify has no native subcategories, so we build the hierarchy through navigation menus and breadcrumbs, backed by BreadcrumbList structured data. Collection descriptions come from metafields rather than one shared template block, so every page carries copy written for its own keyword. Tag-filtered URLs at /collections/name/tag are assessed one by one: kept indexable where demand exists, canonicalised away where it does not. The catch-all /collections/all page gets the same scrutiny.

  3. 03

Our Shopify collection page SEO guide walks through the architecture, filter and faceted navigation decisions in detail.

Hierarchy example

  • /collections/dresses
  • >/collections/linen-midi-dresses
  • >/collections/dresses/tag/linen

Theme-Level Work

Liquid, Online Store 2.0 and Metafields - Where the Real Work Happens

Serious Shopify SEO happens in the theme code, not in an app dashboard. We edit Liquid and Online Store 2.0 JSON templates directly, so fixes are permanent and add zero script weight.

Online Store 2.0 changed what is possible. JSON templates and sections everywhere mean we can build alternate product templates for different content depths, add FAQ and specification sections without installing an app, and control heading structure per template. Metafields carry the structured content: size guides, ingredient lists, compatibility tables and unique selling copy that scales across thousands of products without manual editing.

At Liquid level we write the rules your store follows automatically: fallback meta titles that follow a consistent pattern, alt text drawn from product data, and structured data output built into the theme rather than injected by three overlapping apps. Every change ships on a duplicated theme first and is documented, so a future theme update does not silently erase the work.

For the page-level detail, our Shopify product page SEO checklist covers titles, media, metafield content and template structure step by step.

App Bloat

App Bloat and Theme Speed - Removing the JavaScript Tax

Every app you install adds scripts to your storefront, and many keep loading after you uninstall them. We remove the dead weight and rebuild essential features natively, which is usually the fastest speed win available on Shopify.

Apps inject JavaScript and CSS sitewide through script tags and leftover Liquid snippets. Ten apps can add more page weight than the theme itself. We audit the request waterfall, trace every script back to the app that owns it, and search the theme for orphaned code from apps you removed months ago.

Then we rebuild. Reviews, size charts, FAQs and badges can often run from metafields and native sections instead of a third-party embed. Where an app must stay, we scope its script to the templates that actually need it. Combined with image and LCP fixes on hero and product media, this is how Dawn-based stores hit the Core Web Vitals benchmarks in the table below.

Our Shopify page speed guide breaks down the eight levers that move Core Web Vitals on Shopify themes.

Theme Performance

Shopify Theme Core Web Vitals - A 2026 Benchmark

Theme choice is the single biggest CWV variable on most Shopify stores. The figures alongside are average default mobile LCP / INP scores across three popular Shopify themes - Dawn (Shopify's default), Impact, and Prestige.

After Visionary optimisation, the typical delta we deliver is: Dawn - LCP <2.0s, INP <180ms. Impact - LCP <2.2s, INP <200ms. Prestige - LCP <2.4s, INP <220ms.

Plus vs Standard

Shopify Plus vs Standard Shopify - Where the SEO Capability Diverges

Shopify Plus is the same platform on top of more capability. For SEO that matters in three specific ways: international URL handling, headless commerce options, and theme/checkout customisation.

Standard Shopify

  • International URL strategy - Markets feature only (subdomain or path)
  • Hreflang flexibility - limited customisation
  • Theme + Liquid customisation - constrained by app + theme limits
  • Headless commerce - available but workflow heavier
  • Checkout customisation - limited
  • Multi-storefront governance - single store-view
  • API call limits - standard (40 calls/sec)
  • Best for - SMB / mid-market eCommerce on a single market

Shopify Plus

  • International URL strategy - Markets + custom multi-store-view configurations + dedicated regional sub-domains
  • Hreflang flexibility - full hreflang governance across regional storefronts
  • Theme + Liquid customisation - deeper Liquid + custom Storefront API access
  • Headless commerce - native: Hydrogen + custom React/Next.js fully supported
  • Checkout customisation - full custom checkout (affects schema and tracking)
  • Multi-storefront governance - up to 9 storefront expansion stores
  • API call limits - Plus (200 calls/sec), matters for catalogue tooling
  • Best for - enterprise / multi-region / brands needing headless + custom checkout

If you're on Plus, the right-hand column should be in active use on your store. If you're on Standard and considering migration, SEO capability isn't the only reason - but it's a real one.

International SEO

International SEO for Shopify - Markets, Subfolders, or Subdomains?

The right international setup depends on how independent your regional stores need to be, how many languages you operate in, and whether you're on Plus. This is the decision framework we walk every multi-region Shopify client through.

Question

Do you sell into more than one market today (or imminently)?

Yes →

Question

Are you on Shopify Plus with materially different product ranges or pricing per market?

Yes →

Question

Do your regional stores need full localisation independence - separate catalogues, pricing, and operations?

Yes →

Recommended

Multi-store storefronts (Plus only)

URL pattern: domain.com, domain.de, domain.fr. Best for enterprise multi-region with full localisation independence. Trade-off: maximum operational overhead; up to 9 stores on Plus.

No →

Recommended

Markets with subdomains

URL pattern: uk.domain.com, us.domain.com. Best for Plus tier with materially different product ranges or pricing per market. Trade-off: splits link equity across subdomains; per-region authority builds slower.

No →

Recommended

Shopify Markets (subfolder)

URL pattern: domain.com/uk, /us, /de. Best for 1-3 markets with similar product ranges where brand consistency is the priority. Trade-off: limited per-market SEO independence; hreflang governance constrained.

No →

Recommended

Single-region with hreflang

URL pattern: domain.com only. Best for a single-region store with no immediate international expansion.

Most Shopify stores under £5M annual revenue are best served by Markets with subfolder URLs. Above £5M with materially different regional product ranges, Plus + multi-store starts paying back. We map the decision in the discovery call.

AI Discovery

Shopify SEO for AI Discovery - ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews

The product pages AI engines cite share a profile: explicit specs in structured data, named-author content, transparent source citations, and clean schema. Shopify's defaults give you part of this - we complete the rest.

Structured data does the heavy lifting here: our Shopify structured data guide covers what Shopify outputs by default and what we add on top.

Every Visionary Shopify engagement ships with a GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) extension as standard: structured-data completeness audits plus monthly tracking of which AI surfaces cite your store and where citations move.

+65% profit · 3 months · alongside an existing big agency

Oh My Cream (formerly Naturisimo) was already running with a major agency when they engaged Visionary. The challenge was specific: deliver incremental Shopify SEO + paid Shopping value alongside the incumbent without disruption. We rebuilt the Shopping feed using the [Brand][Product Type][Key Attribute] framework, applied custom labels for margin-tier bidding, and ran our CSS partner across the account. SEO work covered theme CWV optimisation, product page schema completion, and internal linking restructure across the catalogue. Three months in, profit was up 65%.

Pricing

How Much Does Shopify SEO Cost?

Our Shopify SEO retainers start at £1,300 per month and are capped at £2,500 per month. The cap holds whatever your catalogue size, so the cost stays predictable as the store grows.

Retainer from

£1,300

per month

Capped at

£2,500

per month

Google Ads

£850

per month or 10% of spend

Where you sit in that range depends on three things: how competitive your product categories are, how much technical debt the theme carries, and how much collection and content build-out the keyword map calls for. Every retainer includes the technical, on-page and content work described on this page. There is no cheaper tier that quietly drops the parts that matter.

Running Google Ads alongside SEO? We manage ad accounts for £850 per month or 10% of ad spend, whichever is greater, with a minimum ad spend of £1,000 per month, managed up to £250k+ per month. Running both channels together means paid search terms data feeds the SEO keyword map from day one.

FAQ

Common Questions

Yes. Shopify's crawlable structure, fast CDN and clean canonical handling make it competitive out of the box. Rankings are decided by collection architecture, content depth and links, not the platform. The stores that struggle usually have thin collection pages and app-heavy themes, and both are fixable.

We point every internal link at the canonical /products/ URL, remove collection-scoped product paths from the theme's Liquid snippets, and consolidate near-identical variants under one page. Where a variant matches real search demand, such as a colour qualifier, we split it into its own optimised product.

No. The /products/, /collections/ and /pages/ prefixes are fixed on Shopify, and that rarely matters for rankings. We focus on the parts you can control: handles, collection hierarchy, breadcrumbs, internal links and redirects, which carry far more weight than the prefix itself.

Our Shopify SEO retainers run from £1,300 to £2,500 per month, with the cap fixed regardless of catalogue size. The right level depends on competition, technical debt and how much content your collections need. Every retainer includes technical, on-page and content work.

Fast Online Store 2.0 themes built on Shopify's Dawn architecture perform best. They ship less JavaScript, support app blocks and JSON templates, and hit Core Web Vitals more easily. A heavy theme padded with apps will underperform a lean one on every speed metric.

Some help with basics like redirects and alt text. None can restructure collections, rewrite Liquid templates or remove app bloat, which is where rankings are won. We use apps sparingly and build fixes into the theme, so they survive app uninstalls and theme updates.

Yes. Plus stores get extra levers: a customisable checkout, higher variant limits, expansion stores and stronger international tooling through Shopify Markets. We run SEO for standard Shopify and Plus stores, and advise honestly on whether upgrading would actually help organic performance.

Technical fixes such as canonical corrections and speed work often move rankings within weeks. Collection and content programmes typically compound over three to six months. We report revenue from organic search monthly, so you see the trajectory long before it peaks.
