Fundamentals

What Is Mobile SEO and Why Does It Matter?

Google uses mobile-first indexing, meaning the mobile version of your site IS the version Google ranks. If your mobile experience is slow, clunky, or missing content, your rankings suffer across all devices — both mobile and desktop.

The impact is measurable. Sites with poor mobile experiences see bounce rates spike to 50%+ within the first three seconds of load. Conversely, businesses investing in targeted mobile SEO typically see meaningful improvements in engagement and conversion rates.

Mobile SEO covers: responsive design, viewport configuration, touch-friendly navigation, mobile page speed optimisation, and mobile-specific structured data. We also address mobile UX issues like intrusive interstitials, mis-positioned click-to-call buttons, and forms that require excessive scrolling.

As a mobile SEO agency, we audit the gap between your desktop and mobile experience and close it — because what works on desktop doesn't always work on mobile, and vice versa.

Data point

65%

of UK web traffic is mobile

Mobile-first indexing means the mobile version of your site is the version Google ranks — across all devices.

Pricing

Mobile SEO Pricing: What to Expect

Mobile SEO is typically included within broader SEO packages (£1,300–£2,500/mo). Standalone mobile audits range from £500–£1,500 depending on site complexity.

The investment covers:

  • Core Web Vitals optimisation (LCP, CLS, FID)
  • Responsive design fixes and mobile layout issues
  • Mobile page speed improvements (image compression, lazy loading, server response)
  • Mobile-specific structured data and schema markup
  • Ongoing performance monitoring, regression detection, competitive benchmarking

For ecommerce sites or high-traffic portals, investment is often £3,000–£8,000/mo because mobile optimisation directly impacts revenue. A 1-second delay in mobile load time can reduce conversions by 7%. For a site generating £100K/mo, that's £7,000 per second of delay.

The ROI question isn't "What does it cost?" but "What does slow mobile cost us?" Most businesses find that mobile SEO investment pays for itself within 90 days.

Critical Update

Mobile-First Indexing: What It Means for Your Rankings

Since 2021, Google predominantly uses the mobile version of your site for indexing and ranking. If your desktop site has content, features, or internal links that the mobile version doesn't have, Google may not see them—and won't rank your pages for those opportunities.

This shift has caught many businesses off guard. Classic scenarios:

Content Gaps

Desktop version has 2,000 words; mobile version hides half via display: none CSS. Google only sees the mobile version.

Link Discrepancies

Internal navigation links present on desktop but missing on mobile—Google can't discover those pages.

Feature Loss

Desktop has interactive elements that time out or don't load on mobile, degrading user signals.

Structured Data Missing

Mobile version lacks schema markup present on desktop—rich snippets disappear from search results.

Mobile page speed is equally critical. If mobile load times exceed 3 seconds, bounce rates spike and engagement signals drop—telling Google your page isn't delivering value. We conduct a detailed mobile-first audit comparing desktop and mobile experiences side-by-side. See our technical SEO services for deeper audits.

"Chris is a real master of SEO and PPC. I'll never forget the time he discovered what could have been catastrophic SEO issue, prior to a new big website launch that would have cost the business £100,000s (that every other so-called SEO expert we'd engaged had missed)."

Run the Mobile-First Health Check

Most SEO audits report mobile-first indexing as a green checkbox. That misses the point. Mobile-first means Google indexes your mobile experience first; what's not on mobile doesn't get indexed. Below is the mobile-specific health check we run on every Visionary engagement. Score yours; the gaps are usually invisible until they cost rankings.

  • Mobile LCP <2.5s

  • Content parity desktop ↔ mobile (no hidden mobile content)

Hidden mobile content is invisible to Google's mobile-first crawler. What's not on mobile doesn't get indexed.

  • Mobile INP <200ms

Heavy JS execution and over-tracked event listeners stall touch interactions on low-CPU devices.

Mobile CWV

Mobile CWV — Why Desktop-First Audits Miss the Real Problem

Mobile and desktop CWV diverge for predictable reasons — network conditions, device CPU, render path, viewport size. Below is the breakdown of what mobile CWV measures, why each metric matters, and how we optimise each. Most accounts have desktop in green and mobile in red. Google indexes the mobile version.

DimensionWhat it measuresMobile-specific failure modesVisionary optimisation
LCP (Largest Contentful Paint)Time to render largest content elementHero image weight on mobile network; render-blocking JS; font loadingLazy-load below fold + image-format swap (WebP/AVIF) + critical CSS inline
INP (Interaction to Next Paint)Responsiveness to user inputHeavy JS execution on touch; long-running main thread; over-tracked event listenersDefer non-critical JS + reduce third-party tags + virtualise heavy components
CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift)Layout stability during loadImages/embeds without reserved space; ads loading dynamically; lazy-loaded fontsReserve dimensions on every image + font-display strategy + ad slot pre-allocation

Revenue split

Where Revenue Actually Comes From — Mobile vs Desktop

Most accounts under-invest in mobile because the dashboards report desktop conversion rates. The conversion rate is higher on desktop, but the volume is lower on mobile. Below are the actual mobile-vs-desktop revenue splits across three Visionary client engagements — by vertical.

E-commerce — luxury fabrics

LADC

TrafficMobile 62% / Desktop 38%
RevenueMobile 41% / Desktop 59%

High-AOV luxury skews desktop for purchase; mobile is research + add-to-cart.

B2B SaaS

Rocketseed

TrafficMobile 48% / Desktop 52%
RevenueMobile 34% / Desktop 66%

B2B buyer-cycle skews desktop; mobile is research and brand-recognition.

Consumer e-commerce

Strictly Beds

TrafficMobile 71% / Desktop 29%
RevenueMobile 64% / Desktop 36%

Mid-AOV consumer purchase shifts heavily toward mobile.

Sources: Visionary client GA4 + revenue attribution Q1 2026. Splits vary by vertical, AOV, buyer cycle, and brand maturity. Mobile share grows by ~3% per year on average across the portfolio.

Audit divergence

Same Site, Two Audits — Why Findings Diverge

Run the same site through a desktop-first audit and a mobile-first audit and the findings diverge sharply. Most accounts we inherit have only ever been audited desktop-first.

DimensionDesktop-first audit reportsMobile-first audit reports
Hero LCP1.8s (green)3.4s (red)
JS execution2.1s on main thread4.8s on main thread (low-CPU device)
Tap target failuresn/a14 elements below 48×48px threshold
Hidden mobile contentn/a600 words visible desktop only
CWV gradePassFail (LCP + INP)
Indexed contentWhat desktop rendersWhat mobile renders (often less)
Layout shiftsRare on wider viewportsCommon on mobile (image dimensions, ad slots, font swaps)

Same site, two audits. Desktop-first reports green. Mobile-first reports red. Google indexes the mobile version.

Tap-target audit

The Tap-Target Audit Most Mobile SEO Misses

INP failures are usually tap-target failures in disguise. Below is the tap-target audit we run on every mobile engagement. It is the bit competitors miss entirely because the desktop version doesn't surface it.

  • 01Minimum tap target size: 48×48px (Google guideline) — every CTA, link, button measured
  • 02Spacing between adjacent tap targets: ≥8px gap — prevents misclicks
  • 03Thumb-zone reachability: primary CTAs in lower-half of mobile viewport
  • 04Hover-only interactions: flagged — no hover on touch devices
  • 05Form input field height: ≥48px on mobile
  • 06Mobile menu hamburger size: ≥48×48px
  • 07Filter / sort buttons (e-commerce): ≥48×48px
  • 08Pagination controls: ≥48×48px

FAQ

Most Common Mobile SEO Questions

Google predominantly uses the mobile version of your site for indexing and ranking. Content, links, and schema not present on mobile may not be indexed at all.

Use Google's Mobile-Friendly Test for a baseline, then layer mobile-specific Core Web Vitals from CrUX/PSI and a tap-target audit. Most audits stop at the green checkbox; the real issues sit underneath.

Mobile networks are slower, mobile CPUs are weaker, and viewport differences change which element is largest. Hero image weight and render-blocking JS are the most common causes — both fixable without redesign.

Mobile LCP under 2.5s, INP under 200ms, CLS under 0.1. Desktop scores are easier; mobile is where rankings are decided.

For most sites, no. A well-built mobile-first responsive site with strong CWV outperforms AMP and avoids the rendering complexity. AMP only retains niche value for some news publishers.

Redesigns often regress mobile CWV — new heros, new fonts, new third-party tags. Bake mobile-CWV budgets into the brief and audit the staging environment before launch, not after.
