The problem with Shopify SEO apps
Most Shopify SEO apps aren't worth their monthly cost. That's the honest conclusion after bench-testing 15 popular options across 12 client stores. The Shopify App Store is a graveyard of "one-click fixes" that often do more harm to your site's performance than they do good for your rankings.
The trade-off is almost always the same: you get a 5-10 minute setup time in exchange for a permanent 200-500ms Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) delay on every single page load. In the world of Core Web Vitals, that is an astronomical price to pay for functionality that your theme could likely handle natively.

Apps with negative value ROI
We've seen stores running 8+ SEO apps simultaneously, paying £200+ per month for the privilege of slowing their site down to a crawl. The irony? Most of these apps were fighting over the same Meta tags and JSON-LD blocks, creating a "code soup" that confused search engines and users alike.
This guide isn't just a list of reviews. It is a data-backed ranking of the Shopify SEO ecosystem, designed to help you prune your stack, reclaim your site speed, and focus on the SEO levers that actually drive revenue. We cover everything from the basic Shopify SEO fundamentals to advanced technical optimizations that bypass the need for third-party scripts.
Bench-testing methodology
To produce these rankings, we didn't just read the feature lists. We measured each app across 12 live client stores using a combination of field data (CrUX) and lab runs (WebPageTest).
How we measured impact:
- 1LCP & INP Delta: We recorded metrics 7 days pre-install, 7 days post-install, and 7 days post-uninstall to isolate the app's script execution cost.
- 2Search Console Audit: We checked for Rich Results eligibility and "Valid with warnings" flags specifically triggered by the app's Schema injection.
- 3Revenue Attribution: We pulled data from GA4 and Shopify Analytics to see if the app's features (like reviews or image SEO) actually correlated with a lift in organic conversion rates.
Each test was performed on a standard Shopify 2.0 theme (Dawn or similar) to ensure the baseline performance was consistent. We also tested on "Plus" stores to see if higher traffic volumes changed the performance impact (it rarely did - the script overhead remains the same per-user).
The 15 apps ranked

*LCP Delta refers to the additional time added to the Largest Contentful Paint on a 4G mobile connection. ROI represents the measured revenue lift relative to the monthly subscription cost.
Category 1: Apps that help (worth the cost)
Only a handful of apps earned a "Help" verdict. These are the apps that either solve a complex problem that would cost thousands in custom development, or they provide a performance benefit that outweighs their script cost.
Judge.me Reviews
Judge.me is our gold standard for review apps. Unlike competitors that load hundreds of kilobytes of styling and tracking scripts, Judge.me is remarkably lean. More importantly, its JSON-LD implementation is clean and consistently earns "Review" rich results in Google Search.
Performance Data: Judge.me
Across our tests, Judge.me added just 40ms to LCP. Compared to Yotpo's 180ms+, this is a massive win for brands that want social proof without sacrificing speed. It's an essential part of any growth-focused Shopify SEO strategy.
TinyIMG
While Shopify's CDN handles basic image compression, TinyIMG goes a step further by automating Alt-text generation and resizing oversized images before they even hit the CDN. For image-heavy stores (fashion, decor), the cumulative speed gains from properly sized assets often exceed the app's minimal script overhead.
JSON-LD for SEO
If you don't have a developer on retainer to build a custom Schema block, this app is the next best thing. It does one thing - Schema - and it does it without the bloated "SEO Dashboard" that most other apps force on you. This aligns with our principles for effective SEO measurement by focusing on clean data.
Category 2: Apps that break even
The "Neutral" category is the largest. These apps aren't "bad," but they are often redundant. They do exactly what they say on the tin, but they do it in a way that your theme or Shopify's native settings could handle for free.
Apps like SEO Manager and Plug in SEO fall here. They provide a nice UI for editing titles and descriptions, and they'll alert you to broken links. However, with the advent of Shopify 2.0 and native Metafields, most of these features are now just a UI layer over existing functionality.
If you are a solo founder with zero technical ability, these apps are "fine." But as you scale, the £20-£50 monthly fee and the 100ms+ performance tax start to look like a poor investment compared to native solutions.
Category 3: Apps that hurt (remove immediately)
There are four apps we remove from almost every client store we inherit. We call this the "Remove-on-Sight" list.
1. Booster SEO
This app is notorious for injecting heavy JavaScript that attempts to "fix" SEO in real-time. In reality, it adds over 300ms to LCP while providing functionality that should be handled at the theme level.
2. SEOAnt
Similar to Booster, SEOAnt is a "suite" that tries to do everything. By doing everything, it loads a massive amount of code that rarely translates into higher rankings.
3. SEO King
This app uses outdated SEO tactics and a heavy UI that slows down both the storefront and the Shopify admin. Its ROI was the lowest in our entire test group.
4. PageFly (when used sitewide)
While PageFly is a powerful page builder, using it to build your entire store (Home, Collections, Products) is an SEO suicide mission. The code-to-content ratio is extremely poor, and the LCP impact is often >500ms.
Insight: Removing just four heavy apps (Booster, SEOAnt, SEO King, PageFly) dropped LCP by 25% on average across 12 test stores. That speed boost directly correlates with a 3.4% lift in conversion rate for the AB Ellie brand.
Founder Anecdote: "The brand AB Ellie inherited a stack of 8 SEO apps. They were spending £180/month. We removed 4 of them (the ones listed above) and replaced their functionality with 30 lines of Liquid code. Their LCP dropped by 0.6 seconds in one week, and their organic conversion rate lifted by 3.4% as a direct result of the speed boost." - Chris Coussons.
Alternative approach: theme-native SEO without apps
The secret to a fast, SEO-optimised Shopify store isn't finding the right app - it's removing the need for them. Most "SEO problems" are actually just "theme limitations" that can be solved with a few hours of development work.
| App Category | Native Solution | Primary Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Schema / JSON-LD Apps | Liquid 'json-ld' snippet in theme.liquid | 0ms JS execution, full control. |
| Image Alt Text Apps | Shopify 2.0 Bulk Editor + Alt Text Templates | No recurring cost, persistent data. |
| Meta Title/Desc Apps | Native Shopify SEO fields + Metafields | Integrated, fast, no script injection. |
| Broken Link / Redirect Apps | Shopify's URL Redirects (Navigation) | Free, built-in, native processing. |
| Page Speed 'Booster' Apps | Clean code, WebP images, lazy-loading | Solves the cause, not the symptom. |
Case Study: Biopreventative
Biopreventative was using a "Schema App" that cost £15/month. We replaced it with a native product.jsonld.liquid snippet that pulled data directly from Shopify's standard fields and a few custom Metafields for "Brand" and "MPN." Not only did they save £180 a year, but their search results now show price and stock status more reliably because the code is served directly by Shopify, not injected via a third-party script.
// Example of a native JSON-LD snippet (simplified)
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "http://schema.org",
"@type": "Product",
"name": "{{ product.title | escape }}",
"image": "{{ product.featured_image | img_url: '1024x1024' }}",
"description": "{{ product.description | strip_html | escape }}",
"brand": {
"@type": "Brand",
"name": "{{ product.vendor | escape }}"
},
"offers": {
"@type": "Offer",
"priceCurrency": "{{ shop.currency }}",
"price": "{{ product.price | money_without_currency | remove: "," }}",
"availability": "http://schema.org/{% if product.available %}InStock{% else %}OutOfStock{% endif %}"
}
}
</script>
This snippet replaces a £15/month app and adds 0ms to your page load time.
Common signs a Shopify app is hurting your SEO
If you're not sure whether your current app stack is a liability, look for these five warning signs. If you see more than two, it's time for an audit.
- Sitewide JavaScript > 100KB: Use the "Network" tab in Chrome DevTools. Filter by JS. If one SEO app is responsible for >100KB of weight, it's too heavy.
- Duplicate JSON-LD blocks: Right-click your product page, "View Page Source," and search for "ld+json." If you see two different blocks describing the same product, Google may ignore both.
- Render-blocking scripts: If an app requires you to paste a script tag at the top of your
<head>, it is blocking the rest of the page from loading. This is a massive SEO penalty. - Third-party requests to unknown CDNs: "SEO" apps shouldn't be making requests to dozens of tracking domains. This suggests they are selling your visitor data or running bloated analytics.
- GSC Coverage Warnings: Check Search Console "Settings" -> "Crawl Stats." If you see a spike in "Other" or "Internal Search" crawls after installing an app, it might be creating "crawl traps."
Quarterly App Audit Checklist
Don't let "app bloat" creep back in. Use this checklist every three months to ensure your store stays lean and your SEO measurement stays accurate.
Identify 'Ghost' Apps
List every app with 'SEO' or 'Speed' in the name.
Check JS Payload
Use Chrome DevTools to see if the app loads >50KB of JavaScript.
Verify JSON-LD
Search source code for duplicate Schema blocks (Schema.org).
Audit Monthly ROI
Is the app driving at least 3x its cost in attributed revenue?
Test LCP Impact
Run PageSpeed Insights before/after disabling the app in a dev theme.
Native Feature Match
Check if Shopify 2.0 or your theme already has this feature built-in.
