What GEO and SEO actually are
SEO is the practice of earning visibility in ranked search results. GEO is the practice of earning citations and recommendations inside AI-generated answers. AEO, answer engine optimisation, is the older name for the same citation goal, framed around direct answers rather than generated ones.

Search engine optimisation.
You optimise pages so a search engine ranks them, and the reader clicks through. The unit of value is the page and the unit of success is the click. Everything the discipline has built over twenty years serves that one transaction.
GEO
Generative engine optimisation.
You optimise so that ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Microsoft Copilot use your page as a source when they compose an answer, and name your brand when they recommend one. The unit of value is the passage and the unit of success is the citation. You will also see it written as generative engine optimization, the US spelling, which is the same discipline.

Answer engine optimisation.
The same citation goal, expressed through extractable answers: question-shaped headings, definitive opening sentences, tables and lists a machine can lift whole. Most credible agencies sell AEO and GEO as one service, ours included.

The last row is the one that changes budgets. An SEO failure announces itself in a rank tracker. A GEO failure is silent, because nothing reports on an answer you were not part of. That is why GEO measurement has to be set up deliberately, covered further down this page.
What GEO and SEO have in common
Most of GEO is SEO. Generative engines do not maintain a separate web of trusted sources; they retrieve from search indexes, so the pages already ranking are overwhelmingly the pages that get cited.
The overlap is large. Crawlability decides whether a model can reach you. Topical relevance decides whether you are retrieved. Authority signals decide whether your claim is trusted over a competing one. Accurate, current content decides whether the engine keeps using you. None of that is new work.
Commercially, that means GEO is not a second retainer. It is a layer on the ranking asset you already own, and if that asset is weak, GEO has nothing to stand on.

How SEO decides. The engine crawls and indexes your page, interprets the query, scores every candidate document for relevance and quality, and returns an ordered list. You influence it by improving the document and the signals pointing at it, and the output is stable enough to track day to day.
How GEO decides. The engine expands the question into related sub-questions, retrieves passages rather than whole pages, checks whether independent sources agree with the claim it is about to make, then composes an answer and attributes a handful of sources. Corroboration is the stage most teams underestimate: a claim that exists only on your own domain reads as an assertion, while the same claim echoed elsewhere reads as evidence.
There is a second, slower layer. When an assistant recommends a brand without citing anyone, that comes from associations formed during training rather than live retrieval. It survives model updates only if the entity and corroboration work is sustained.
Where AEO fits: the SEO, GEO and AEO map
AEO and GEO are the same job under two names. SEO is the parent discipline that both depend on.

If you are comparing AEO vs SEO, you are asking the same question as GEO vs SEO. The answer does not change.
SEO optimises for placement in a list of links. AEO optimises for extraction, so an answer engine can lift a clean, self-contained answer and credit you. GEO optimises for inclusion, so a generative engine uses your page as evidence and names your brand. Extraction and inclusion are two views of one outcome, which is why almost nobody sells them separately.
The naming will keep moving. LLM SEO, LLM optimisation, AI search optimisation and answer engine optimization all circulate for the same deliverables. Judge a proposal by its scope, not its invoice.
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. GEO is not replacing SEO, and SEO is not being phased out. Generative engines are built on top of search indexes, so the pages that rank are the pages that get retrieved. Removing the ranking layer removes the supply of citations.
What is genuinely changing is the share of demand that resolves without a click. Fewer people click through for a definition or a quick comparison, because the answer arrives in the result. That compresses informational traffic while leaving commercial and transactional queries largely intact, and it shifts the value of a top-of-funnel page from the session it earns to the citation it earns.
SEO's job description has widened rather than ended. You still need the pages to rank. You now also need them to be quotable, corroborated and attributable when a model writes about your category. Anyone selling GEO as a replacement is selling a story about the market rather than a plan for your site.
A GEO failure is silent.
Do you need both GEO and SEO?
Almost certainly yes, but the split is not fifty-fifty. Here is how to decide where your next pound goes.
If: Your site does not rank on page one for your commercial terms
Then: Fix SEO first. GEO has nothing to retrieve until you rank
If: You rank well but buyers say they found competitors “in ChatGPT”
Then: Add GEO now. The ranking asset is there and is not converting into citations
If: You sell a considered purchase with a long research phase
Then: Run both, weighted to GEO on the content that feeds the shortlist
If: You sell on price, locally, with short research cycles
Then: Stay weighted to SEO and local search; the answer layer matters less
In our own retainers, GEO accounts for roughly a fifth of the work and SEO for the rest. That ratio holds because four fifths of GEO is SEO you were doing anyway. If a proposal reverses the split, ask what it stopped doing to make room.
Whichever way you weight it, treat it as one budget and one team. Splitting GEO into a separate line item with a separate owner is how organisations pay twice for schema, content structure and technical fixes that only needed doing once. We can be specific about that diff because the work produced traceable results on our own site. Visionary is cited in Google AI Overviews on multiple commercial terms, and in July 2026 two client enquiries arrived through ChatGPT.
What the referral path looked like
The referral path was legible end to end. The session landed from the assistant, was grouped into a purpose-built AI Assistant channel rather than lumped into direct, reached a service page, and converted through the standard enquiry form. Two enquiries is a small number and we present it as one agency's experience, not a benchmark. The point is that the chain from citation to enquiry is traceable at all, which is what most GEO reporting is missing.
For the dataset behind those tactics, our AEO statistics report analysed 12,400 AI Overview queries and found that definitive opening sentences under a heading correlate most strongly with citation, at 0.49, with citation density behind it at 0.42. That is why passage rewriting sits in the "new" column rather than the "nice to have" one.
What does not change: the fundamentals still apply
The fundamentals did not get replaced, they got more important. Generative engines are downstream of search indexes, so every classic weakness compounds twice: once in the ranking, and again in the answer that would have cited you.
Crawlability and indexation
If a crawler cannot reach the page, no engine can retrieve it and no model can cite it.
Site speed and stability
Slow, unstable pages get crawled less, and less crawling means staler retrieval.
Accurate, current content
Engines favour sources that are demonstrably maintained; a visible review date is a signal.
Genuine topical depth
Shallow coverage fails ranking and fails corroboration, because there is nothing to agree with.
Structured data
Article, FAQPage, Organization and sameAs still describe your entity to machines that must resolve it.
Internal linking
Still distributes authority, still tells a retriever which passage belongs to which topic.
Authoritative sources
Citing real sources, with names and dates, makes your claims safe to repeat.
Clear authorship
A named author with credentials is an attribution signal in both systems.
Off-site presence
Reviews, listings, forums and press are where corroboration lives, and always were.
