Novidea: Top of Search for "Insurance Software" UK + US in 3 Months
Novidea had serious indexability issues keeping its insurtech SaaS platform out of Google's index. We led the site migration to fix the technical foundation - crawl architecture, canonicalisation, render path, hreflang for dual-market - then layered topical content depth and link signal alignment around the primary commercial keyword.

Overview
What does an international SEO agency do?
An international SEO agency wins search visibility for one brand across several countries and languages at once. That means choosing the right site structure for each market, implementing hreflang so the right page ranks in the right country, researching how buyers in each market actually search, and building content and links that earn rankings locally rather than exporting a UK strategy and hoping.
The reason this is a distinct discipline is that international SEO failures are structural. A translated page targeting the wrong language code, a US site cannibalising the UK site, or a ccTLD launched with zero authority will underperform for years, and no amount of content fixes it. The expensive mistakes happen in the first month of an expansion, when the architecture is decided.
Our international SEO services cover the full sequence: market research, structure and hreflang, localisation, link acquisition in-market, and measurement per country. We work as an international SEO consultant on architecture-only engagements too, where your in-house team executes and we set the direction.
Two things separate this from ordinary SEO with more countries attached. First, the decisions interact: your structure choice changes your hreflang plan, which changes your content plan, which changes where links need to come from. Second, the evidence lives in different places. UK keyword data tells you nothing about how a Munich procurement manager phrases a search, so every market gets its own research rather than an assumption inherited from home.
One honest boundary up front. Most of our international work is Google-first, because Google carries the majority of search traffic in almost every market our clients enter. Where Baidu, Yandex or Naver matter to your plan, we advise on their requirements and tell you plainly when a local specialist is the better buy.
Selling into the EU as well as the UK? Our guide to multi-country, multi-currency shopping feeds covers the paid and feed side of the same expansion.

Who We Work With
Who we run international campaigns for
We work with four kinds of multi-market brand, and the strategy differs for each. What they share is the moment they call us: either just before an expansion, when the structure is still cheap to get right, or a year after one, when rankings abroad never arrived and nobody can say why.
eCommerce retailers selling cross-border
One hreflang template error multiplied across thousands of product URLs.
UK stores expanding into the EU, US or Australia, usually on Shopify or a headless build. The work is market-by-market: duplicate content control across near-identical English variants, currency and sizing localisation, and hreflang across thousands of product URLs where one template error multiplies instantly.
B2B SaaS and technology firms
Buyers search in English everywhere, so structure decides who wins.
Software buyers search in English almost everywhere, which changes the calculus: often one global site, subfolders for priority languages, and positioning content tuned per market. Our Novidea engagement is the model here: top of search for "insurance software" in both the UK and US within three months, held through a site migration.
Exporters and manufacturers
Translated keyword lists that no buyer in-market actually types.
Industrial and wholesale brands entering markets where buyers search in German, French, Spanish or Dutch. Multilingual keyword research done by meaning rather than word-for-word translation is the difference between ranking and existing.
Multi-market service brands
Structure, localisation and authority all moving at once, ungoverned.
Travel, education and professional services businesses trading in several countries under one brand. These are the engagements where structure, localisation and in-market authority all move together, and where an enterprise SEO agency approach to templates and governance pays for itself.
Decision Framework
ccTLD vs subfolder vs subdomain: how we decide your international structure
example.de
ccTLD
example.com/de/
Subfolder
de.example.com
Subdomain
Subfolders unless proven otherwise.
For most UK brands expanding abroad, subfolders on your existing domain are the right answer, because they inherit the authority you have already earned. ccTLDs and subdomains are the exceptions, and choosing between the three is the single highest-stakes decision in international SEO. Here is the framework we use.
ccTLDs (example.de). The strongest country signal Google recognises, and sometimes a trust requirement: German and French consumers measurably prefer local domains. The cost is severe. Every ccTLD starts with zero authority and needs its own link acquisition, hosting and maintenance. We recommend ccTLDs only when local trust or legal requirements outweigh the authority penalty, and when there is budget to build each domain up independently.
Subfolders (example.com/de/). Every market inherits the full authority of your existing domain, so new-market pages can rank in weeks rather than years. Geo-targeting is weaker than a ccTLD, which is exactly what hreflang and localised content exist to fix. One domain, one crawl budget, one link profile working for every market. This is our default recommendation and the structure behind most of the international results on this site.
Subdomains (de.example.com). Google treats subdomains as more separate from the root domain than subfolders, so you get most of a ccTLD's isolation with none of its trust benefit. There are legitimate technical reasons to use them, usually infrastructure or platform constraints, but we treat subdomains as a constraint to work around rather than a strategy to recommend.
Four questions decide it in practice. Does the target market show a measurable preference for local domains, as Germany and France do? Is there budget and patience to build authority per domain, which usually means years rather than quarters? Are there legal or operational reasons the market needs a separate entity online? And does your platform actually support clean subfolder internationalisation, or would forcing it create a technical mess worse than the alternative? Answer those honestly and the structure usually chooses itself. We document the reasoning either way, because the decision gets relitigated every time a new stakeholder arrives, and the document is cheaper than the argument.
The verdict we give most clients: subfolders unless proven otherwise. If you are already live on the wrong structure, moving is a migration with real risk attached, and we run it through our SEO migration services process: full URL inventory, one-to-one redirects, and pre- and post-launch crawl comparison per market. Restructuring an international site badly is one of the few SEO mistakes that can cost rankings in every market simultaneously, which is why we never recommend the move unless the evidence is clear that staying costs more.
Technical Core
Hreflang implementation that actually validates
Hreflang tells Google which language and country each version of a page targets, so searchers land on the right one. It is also the most commonly botched tag in technical SEO, and broken hreflang silently costs rankings in every market at once. Nothing errors, nothing warns; the wrong pages simply rank in the wrong countries, and conversion rates abroad quietly stay terrible.
1<link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-gb" href="https://example.com/uk/" />2<link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-us" href="https://example.com/us/" />3<link rel="alternate" hreflang="de-de" href="https://example.com/de/" />4<link rel="alternate" hreflang="x-default" href="https://example.com/" />- 01
Valid codes only
Every code is a valid ISO 639-1 language plus optional ISO 3166-1 country, so "en-gb" works and the common guess "en-uk" fails silently.
- 02
Return tags
Every pair of pages must reference each other, or Google ignores both.
- 03
Self-reference
Every page includes a tag pointing at itself.
- 04
x-default
The x-default entry catches every searcher who matches no listed market.
- 05
Absolute and indexable
URLs must be absolute, canonical and indexable: hreflang pointing at redirects or noindexed pages is dead weight.
On large eCommerce sites we implement hreflang in the sitemap rather than the head, where thousands of URL pairs are easier to generate and validate. Either way, validation is not a one-off. Hreflang decays every time a template changes, which is why it sits inside the ongoing crawl monitoring our technical SEO agency work covers.

AI Visibility
AI search does not stop at the border
2026
Reported per market, alongside classic rankings
AI assistants and Google's AI Overviews now answer buyer questions in every market you trade in, and they cite different sources in different languages. A brand that ranks in the UK but has no localised, quotable content in German will simply not be cited when a German buyer asks an assistant for recommendations. Almost no international SEO provider is even measuring this yet.
We treat AI visibility as a per-market output of the same work. Localised pages are structured so direct answers are liftable in each language. Entity data, organisation schema and consistent local details give AI systems a coherent picture of who you are in each country. And we monitor which prompts and queries cite you per market, alongside classic rankings, so the report shows the whole picture of how buyers actually find you in 2026.
This matters most in exactly the markets where you are new. In your home market, brand recognition papers over gaps. In a new country, an AI recommendation may be the first time a buyer ever hears your name, and whether you appear is decided by the structure and localisation work on this page.
The practical work is unglamorous and specific. Question-led headings in each language, so assistants can lift an answer cleanly. Localised proof points, because an assistant answering a French buyer favours French evidence. Hreflang and canonical signals kept clean, because AI systems inherit the same crawl confusion Google does when two English variants fight over the same query. None of it is a separate "AI service" with a separate fee; it is what competent international SEO produces as a by-product when it is done with 2026 in mind.
By Region
EMEA, APAC and the Americas: what changes by region
EMEA
The densest multilingual challenge: many languages in close markets, with strong consumer preference for local-language content and, in Germany and France, for local domains. Structure and localisation decisions carry the most weight here, and GDPR-era trust signals matter on every commercial page.
APAC
English works for B2B in much of the region, but consumer plays in Japan and Korea need native-language execution and, in Korea, Naver-aware planning. We are direct about where we lead and where a local partner should. Australia is the common first APAC step for UK brands: same language, different demand patterns and seasonality, which our travel SEO agency work deals with constantly.
Americas
The US rewards the subfolder-plus-hreflang play more than anywhere: enormous demand, same language, and near-duplicate content risk unless en-gb and en-us variants are handled deliberately. Spanish-language targeting for the US and Latin America is a separate keyword map, not a translation job.
Pricing
International SEO pricing
Our SEO retainers start at £1,300 per month and are capped at £2,500 per month, and international engagements are priced inside that same range. Where you sit depends on market count, language count and technical scope. No percentage-of-revenue pricing, no surprise add-ons, month to month. We publish these figures because almost no international SEO agency in the UK does, and we think that tells you something about how the sector prices.
| Scope | Typical retainer |
|---|---|
| One additional market, same language (e.g. UK brand entering the US) | From £1,300/month |
| Two to four markets or first non-English language | Mid-range between £1,300 and £2,500/month |
| Five or more markets, multiple languages, or complex replatforming alongside | At or near the £2,500/month cap |

Our market entry process
- 01
Market evidence
We size search demand per candidate market, benchmark the local competitors, and confirm buyers there search for what you sell. Markets are chosen on data, not on where the sales team fancies a trip.
- 02
Architecture decision
ccTLD, subfolder or subdomain, decided with the framework above and documented with reasoning. Hreflang mapping, URL structure and Search Console setup are specified before anything is built.
- 03
Localised build
Keyword-researched, localised pages for the priority queries in each market, shipped in publication order: commercial pages first, supporting content behind them. Technical implementation validated with a full crawl per market.
- 04
In-market authority and measurement
Link acquisition and digital PR per country, with rankings, traffic and enquiries reported per market from day one, so you always know which countries are paying back and which need a different plan. Underperforming markets get a diagnosis and a decision, not another quarter of the same activity on autopilot.
Why Us
Why brands pick us for multi-market SEO
Structure decided on evidence
ccTLD, subfolder or subdomain chosen against four documented tests, so the decision survives the next stakeholder who questions it.
Hreflang that validates
Return tags, self-references, x-default and indexable targets checked on every crawl, not once at launch.
Localisation, not translation
Every localised page targets a researched local query, reviewed by a native speaker, in local currency and idiom.
In-market authority
Links and digital PR earned per country, because an entirely British link profile reads as a British site everywhere else.
Reporting per market
Rankings, traffic, enquiries and AI citations broken out by country from month one, so weak markets get a decision.
Capped fees
£1,300 to £2,500 per month however many countries the engagement covers. No per-market multiplication.
