Law Firm SEO Agency That Outranks the Directories
Award-winning — Practice-Area Content Strategy, E-E-A-T Authority & Local SEO That Captures High-Intent Client Enquiries
Legal directories own Google's first page for almost every practice area. They charge thousands in annual fees and give the same leads to your competitors. Your own website can outrank them — capturing high-intent client enquiries at zero per-lead cost. We specialise in law firm SEO that builds authority practice area by practice area, location by location, until your firm owns the searches that generate the highest-value instructions.

Overview
Why Law Firms Need Specialist SEO
Google classifies legal content as YMYL (Your Money or Your Life), applying the highest quality standards. E-E-A-T signals — Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness — aren't optional for legal SEO. They're essential. An agency that doesn't understand YMYL will waste your budget.
Legal directories rank because they have breadth — thousands of firm listings. But they can't match the depth a single firm can build around its practice areas. Comprehensive content ecosystems systematically outrank directories for specific practice-area searches.
People searching for '[practice area] solicitor [city]' have already decided they need legal help. They're choosing a firm. These are high-intent searches with significant case values. When your firm ranks organically, you capture these enquiries at zero per-lead cost.
We build practice-area authority through topic clusters, local SEO through Google Business Profile and citation strategy, and trust through author profiles with SRA numbers, qualifications, and credentials. All content is SRA-compliant.
Every directory listing, every paid referral — there's a cost. Organic search delivers enquiries from people who've specifically chosen your firm.

Visionary Marketing is a UK SEO agency specialising in law firms — single-site solicitors through multi-site practices, with active focus on personal injury, family, conveyancing, wills & probate, commercial, and criminal practice areas. We build SRA-aware content, practice-area-specific keyword strategies, and case-attribution reporting. Senior specialists only. Newcastle-headquartered. No long-term contracts.
Methodology Lead-In
Why Most Law Firm SEO Fails (and Why That's Predictable)
The practice-area mismatch problem. Most generalist SEO agencies treat a law firm as one entity targeting "[area] solicitor [town]". That's a generic-keyword strategy that wastes budget. A multi-disciplinary firm has six or more practice areas, each with its own buyer journey, intent profile, content density requirement, and link-source landscape. PI clients research differently from probate clients. Conveyancing intent is transactional and timed (search volume spikes around interest-rate decisions). Family law is referral-led with light digital research. Treating these as one audience is the first failure.
The SRA Marketing Code problem. Solicitors marketing through SEO content are bound by SRA Standards (Principle 6 — public confidence, plus the SRA Code of Conduct rules on legal services advertising). Most agencies don't read those rules. Content gets rejected by the firm's COLP / compliance officer. Drafts sit in Slack channels for weeks. SEO velocity collapses while the agency keeps billing. We'd estimate around half the law firm SEO engagements we audit have content compliance bottlenecks somewhere in the chain.
The reporting mismatch. Most agencies report on impressions, rankings, organic traffic, sometimes goals. A law firm partner doesn't care about any of those numbers. The metric that matters is cost per signed case, by practice area. Until reporting is restructured around case-attribution — phone-to-case, form-to-case, even chambers-to-case for barristers — SEO at law firms looks like a cost centre rather than a pipeline channel. Most engagements never make that transition. We start with it.
What this section is leading to. The next four sections walk through how we actually work with law firm clients: the practice-area opportunity matrix that tells you which practice areas to invest in (some are not worth the spend), the practice-area-specific content architecture, the SRA-compliant content workflow, and a single named case study. Pricing — at the bottom of the page — is treated as an essay rather than as a feature-card grid because the work isn't standardised across firms.
Signature Tool
Find Out Which Practice Areas Are Actually Worth Your SEO Investment
Most law firm SEO budgets get spread across all practice areas equally. That's wrong. Some practice areas are highly competitive and require £8k+/month to move; some are wide-open and rank with £2k/month. Below is the matrix we use to decide where to invest first. Click any cell to read the detail.
| Practice Area | UK Monthly Search Volume | Top-3 SERP DR Average | Realistic Time to Rank | Approx Cost-per-Case (Organic) | Content Density Required | Link Landscape |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Personal Injury | ||||||
| Family Law | ||||||
| Conveyancing | ||||||
| Wills, Probate & Trusts | ||||||
| Commercial / Corporate | ||||||
| Criminal Defence |
The shape of the answer for most regional firms: invest first in the practice areas with low DR competition (Wills & Probate, Family, Criminal Defence in many regions), build cash flow there, then redirect spend at PI and Conveyancing where competition is higher. Investing equally across all six practice areas is the most common mistake we audit.
Inside the Engagement
How We Run a Law Firm SEO Engagement
Practice-area scoping (week 1)
We start by mapping which practice areas are commercial priorities for the firm — not which ones are easy to write about. A managing partner might tell us conveyancing is the volume engine and family is the margin engine; we'll target accordingly. We pull current rankings, current GSC queries, and the practice-area matrix data above to identify where the gap is between what the firm wants and what they actually appear for. The deliverable is a 1-page priority document signed off by the partner before any content is written.
SRA-compliant content workflow (week 2 onwards)
Most agencies write content then send it to compliance. We invert that. Briefs are drafted, then reviewed by the firm's COLP / compliance officer at brief stage — not at draft stage. The COLP signs off on claims, factual statements, and tone before we write a word. Drafts then go through compliance in a single-pass review averaging 4–6 working days, not 2–3 weeks. This collapses the bottleneck that kills most law firm SEO programmes.
Practice-area content architecture
Each priority practice area gets: one main hub page, 6–10 sub-page service entries (offence types for criminal, matter types for family, injury types for PI, etc.), 3–5 location pages where geographic intent is high, and an editorial schedule of supporting content (case-law commentary, FAQ pieces, 'what to expect' content). The architecture is mapped out before writing starts so internal linking is coherent and doesn't have to be retrofitted.
Local SEO and solicitors-specific citations
Most legal directories (Solicitors Guide UK, Law Society Find a Solicitor, Lawyer.com, Reviewsolicitors, etc.) carry citation weight beyond what consumer SEO tools track. We audit and clean the firm's listings across these, plus Google Business Profile (one per office), plus the practice-specific niche directories that depend on practice area (Resolution for family, APIL for PI, STEP for trusts, etc.).
Case-attribution reporting
The most important section. We integrate with the firm's case management system (Proclaim, LEAP, Quill, Clio Manage — depending) to track inbound enquiries through to signed cases, by practice area, by source. Monthly reports show cost per signed case, organic vs paid contribution, and practice-area-level pipeline. No 'impressions' or 'rankings' graphs unless they're contextualising actual case data.
Deep Case Study · Family Law · Surrey
How a Surrey Family Law Firm Replaced All Three Lead-Gen Subscriptions in 11 Months
Where they started
A 14-fee-earner family law specialist firm in Surrey, two offices, five partners, focused on HNW divorce, complex children matters, and pre-nup/post-nup work. They were spending around £4,800/month across three lead-generation subscriptions: an SQE-graduate referral platform, a local-paper digital package, and a major comparison-style legal portal. The lead quality was wildly mixed — they were paying for shared leads, often with three other firms quoting the same prospect. Their organic visibility outside their own firm name was minimal. A practice-area audit showed they ranked nowhere meaningful for "high-net-worth divorce solicitor", "complex children matter solicitor [their towns]", or "pre-nuptial agreement solicitor [their towns]" — all of which are the matters they wanted more of.
Why the previous SEO approach hadn't worked
Two prior agencies had attempted SEO for them. The first ran a generic "[town] solicitor" strategy that got them ranking for low-value local queries that drove unqualified family enquiries (custody disputes from non-paying clients, do-it-yourself divorce questions, etc.). The second attempted commercial SEO content but didn't have the practice-area depth to differentiate HNW work from volume family law. Compliance reviews on both engagements caused multi-month publishing delays. Neither agency restructured reporting around case attribution, so the firm couldn't see whether SEO was generating signed cases.
What we did
We rescoped the engagement around three priority sub-practice areas that the partners actually wanted to grow: HNW divorce, complex children matters, and pre/post-nuptial agreements. We rebuilt the site architecture around these — three pillar pages, 14 supporting service pages, and 18 location pages targeting the specific towns where the firm wanted HNW client volume. The COLP was added to the brief-stage approval cycle. Content was written by a former family-law-firm marketing lead working under our editorial direction. Each piece referenced specific published case law (e.g. Sharp v Sharp [2017], Standish v Standish [2024]) where relevant — language the previous agencies hadn't used. We built citations into Resolution membership listings, plus targeted secondary mentions on financial-planning press where divorce financial settlement context was on-topic.
What changed
By month 5, the firm was ranking on page one for "high-net-worth divorce solicitor Surrey" and "pre-nuptial agreement solicitor Guildford". By month 8, qualified enquiry volume from organic had matched the volume they were getting from the three paid subscriptions combined. By month 11, all three lead-generation subscriptions had been cancelled. Cost per signed case from organic settled at around £210, against a comparison-portal cost-per-case of approximately £680 (and a much lower close rate). The firm took on three new HNW divorce mandates in Q1 alone, the kind of work that justifies the firm's senior bench.
What's next for them
The firm is expanding into a fourth priority practice area — pre-litigation family business protection (a niche commercial-meets-family practice area) — and we've started building the content scaffolding around it. They've also asked us to advise on a Resolution-led thought leadership push for the senior partner, which will fold into the broader SEO programme as named-author content for E-E-A-T compounding. The engagement renewed in month 13 on a month-to-month basis with no long-term contract.
Comparison
Why Most Law Firms Are Better Off With a Specialist Than a Full-Service Agency
Most law firms get pitched by full-service marketing agencies that offer SEO as one of fifteen services. The pitches sound comprehensive. The work that follows usually isn't. Below is the honest comparison from inside the agency world.
| Full-service "marketing agency" | Specialist SEO consultancy (us) | |
|---|---|---|
| Account team | Account manager, project manager, copywriter, SEO exec | One named senior specialist |
| Their incentive | Cross-sell social, email, brand, web design, PR | SEO outcomes — that's the only billable line |
| Compliance literacy | Generic — usually not familiar with SRA rules | SRA-aware content workflow with COLP at brief stage |
| Reporting | Impressions, rankings, organic sessions | Cost per signed case, by practice area |
| Practice-area depth | Generalist — copywriter learns the area in week 1 | PI, Family, Conveyancing, Probate, Commercial and Criminal experience |
| Content compliance throughput | Multi-week loops are normal | Single-pass review, average 4–6 working days |
| Contract | 12-month minimum standard | Month-to-month |
| Typical fee | £4,000–£12,000/month + production | £2,500–£6,500/month all-in |
The pitch from full-service agencies is breadth. The reality your practice needs is depth. If your firm is happy to be one of an account manager's eight files this quarter, full-service is fine. If you'd rather be the only file the specialist is working on this morning, that's us.
Pricing Philosophy
What This Costs (and Why We Don't Publish Packages)
We don't publish a tiered pricing table for law firm SEO because the work doesn't standardise that way. A single-site conveyancing practice in a town of 30,000 needs roughly a quarter of the content density that a multi-site mixed-discipline firm in central London needs. Pretending the same package fits both is what gets agencies into bad-fit engagements. What we'll tell you instead is the typical range and the variables that move the number.
Most engagements with us land between £2,500/month for a single-practice-area, single-office firm and £6,500/month for a multi-discipline, multi-site firm with high publishing cadence. Above £6,500/month is rare and usually means either international expansion (which we don't recommend most law firms pursue without a clear commercial reason) or competitor-displacement work in saturated markets like central London PI. Below £2,500/month is also rare because the floor is the practice-area scoping work, the COLP integration, and the case-attribution reporting build — those costs are roughly fixed regardless of firm size. We'll quote a fixed number after a 30-minute audit conversation. We don't quote without that conversation because a fixed quote without scoping is a fiction.
No long-term contracts. Engagements are monthly with 30 days' notice. We review fee against delivered outcomes at month 3, 6 and 12. If at month 6 you're not seeing measurable progress against the priority practice areas we agreed at scoping, we'll tell you so before you have to ask, and we'll either reset the brief or end the engagement. Most clients who reach month 6 stay through year two. Some don't, and that's fine — the model only works if both sides are getting value.
